If you’re someone who’s heavily into angels for probably all the wrong reasons, and who thinks they’re wonderful, “cute” beings, there to do your bidding and bring you joy, read on – you might be surprised to discover the TRUTH about them – particularly if you’re also someone who’s not into reading scripture for whatever reason. There’s a huge danger in having the wrong knowledge about these awesome Beings as for some of you, it could literally send you straight to hell when you die, and I’m not exaggerating in the least in that statement!!
Pastor John MacArthur gives a superb talk on the topic outlining that angels have very specific roles in the lives of both believers and unbelievers alike, but he makes a very poignant point – if you are a Christian when you die, angels will carry you to the Throneroom of God, but if you are an unrepentant unbeliever, they will cast you into hell along with the devil and his angels.

There’s a whole lot that could be written about angels, and many books have indeed been written on everything and anything to do with these awesome beings, but first and foremost, what I want to bring to your attention (if you didn’t already know it) is that the angels were not created for us!!! In other words, they’re not floating around waiting for us to give them instructions on what we need them to do for us, which is sadly what some seem to think is the case. They are God’s angels created by Him, for His work, not ours.
They are referred to numerous time s in scripture as the “Heavenly Host” and often referred to as an army, and God Himself is the Commander of this army:
Isa 45:12 I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host (i.e. angels).
As members of this army, angels are not the soft, cuddly, cute beings we tend to think of them as, especially nowadays when you find angels in very guise possible, especially cherubic children, and always with a demeanour you feel is extremely warm and friendly. Truth is, if you really were to meet an angel you’d discover the huge error in that in an instant, as you most likely fell to the floor in sheer fear and dread – all of those who met angels personally in scripture were extremely devout people to start with, and yet most were drained or fearful of the encounter, because they recognised an important attribute of angels – that they reside in God’s presence and are sent only by Him to undertake His work.
Angels are God’s Messengers and many times are used to deliver God’s Judgement on individuals and nations, etc. So, you really don’t want to meet an angel, for (leaving aside Gabriel’s message to Mary) they almost always bring a message of what God intends to do to mankind, and it’s rarely good news. And particularly in our times when we are so close to the end days – any angels that are being seen by people nowadays are more likely than ever to be demons, because they are only deceiving people into idolatry and sin (see below).
Paul in particular points out this very concern in his letter to the Church in Galatia, where many were already beginning to listen to all sorts of alternative teachings:
Gal 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
And if Paul felt it was a serious enough issue to maintain the integrity of the gospel that even angels who might preach a different one should be cursed, then I think you can be contented that unless an angel delivers a message in accordance with God’s Word then you can be pretty sure he ain’t an angel sent by God!!! And you only have to look at the ridiculous messages being taught by some as being given to them by angels (e.g. Todd Bentley) and the way in which many focus solely on angels to the exclusion of all else:
“One of my other clients was trying to ignore a steady angelic voice within which counseled, “It’s time to look for work at a different place,” because she didn’t trust God to fulfill her material needs during the job transition.” Doreen Virtue, psychic site “People & Possibilities” (emphasis mine).
For some strange reason, angels are almost always depicted as women or children, perhaps in some silly attempt to complete the deception of them being cute and cuddly and not fearful in the least. But scripture makes it plain that although (like God) they probably have no distinct gender as such, they are always described in male terms and when they show up on earth, have the appearance of a man, never a woman. And scripture shows how angels have been the messengers of death and destruction in Old Testament times…….
2 Kings 19:35 And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
Gen 19:12-13 Then the men (angels) said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.”
…….and will once again be so in the not too distant future of our own period of history, when God unleashes the Judgments outlined in The Revelation. And talking of which – think about the very opening statements in that book – written by John – the same John who Jesus called His beloved disciple – who, on seeing the incarnated Son of God in all His Glory, fell at His feet as though dead:
Rev 1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. …...17-18 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying to me, Do not fear, I am the First and the Last, and the Living One, and I became dead, and behold, I am alive for ever and ever, Amen. And I have the keys of hell and of death.
So next time you hear someone talking about how “their” angel told them something, or if they suggest you should talk to yours, or indeed if they tell you how they converse with angels regularly – provide them with some information on how they are most likely being deceived. Those who ignore your advice will be heavily under God’s judgement for their idolatry, and need to be prayed for constantly that He would have mercy on them, open their eyes to the deception, that they might turn from it, and seek forgiveness for their sins in Jesus’ Name.
Blessings to all my readers for Christmas 2009 🙂
