Once again, I feel I need to revisit this topic as lately it appears that the depth of deception showering the world currently is growing rapidly. I last wrote about this last year, and since then, things seem to be just getting worse. It would appears 2/3 of the world considers itself to be “Christian” – primarily because the real term “pagan” is so politically incorrect as to be unusable, and yet about 70% of those who hold that title (of Christian) would really fall into the latter camp of paganism, as they have no concept of what the term Christian truly means – as far as they’re concerned – it is a title given to anyone who is generally “good” or hasn’t murdered anyone. Indeed murder seems to be about the only “sin” that most would say removes that title from someone and place I spoke to recently stated that she felt it was the only title she could have because while she wasn’t a practicing Catholic, she equally wasn’t Jewish or a Muslim so there was nothing left to call herself but Christian, and therein lies the biggest problem of all.
So, my question today, is to those of you in that camp – you’ve always considered yourself to be a Christian but never given much thought to why or what it might mean. Perhaps if I point out what it isn’t it may help you better decide. It is NOT a title by default i.e. the one to take purely because you don’t consider yourself a Jew or a Muslim so therefore by default, you must be a Christian. Nor is it a title you can have just because you don’t break all of the Commandments in one go (but do so regardless). And neither is it a title you can have because your parents are Christian and/or you regularly attend a particular church (without much care to what’s said within it) or you’ve read the Bible from cover to cover. There are so many confused people out there who hold the title but deny everything the title demands.
A famous lassie on TV (probably THE most famous around, but we’ll keep her nameless here in the interests of any possible defamation lawsuit LOL) has repeatedly been heard to call herself a Christian, yet now is very openly endorsing a whole NEW way to live as one. Her “New Age” way involves NO Jesus, NO sin, NO hell, and probably not a lot else other than a lot of mindless mumbo jumbo and occultic rites and rituals wrapped up in warm, fuzzy, semi-religious overtones – enough to keep those who really aren’t that serious about having a faith, but want something nonetheless to make them feel better about themselves. But while this lady contends she could never hold to true Christian teaching, she constantly uses the term Christian to validate her own “way to God” – I suspect we’ve all heard her infamous words “But there can’t only be ONE way to God – there just can’t”! Yet therein lies the whole crux of Christianity – because Jesus said that HE is the ONLY ONE way to God so you can’t have it both ways.
A true Christian is primarily someone who has repented of their sins, accepted Jesus as the only and final sacrifice before a Holy and Just God in payment for their sins, and who is then “born again” of the Holy Spirit into a new life submitted to God through Jesus alone. Although a saved sinner, a true Christian will no longer commit repetitive sins to the best of their ability, but instead desire to overcome those sins by allowing God to teach discipline. A true Christian holds to what Christ teaches in scripture and submits to Him and His Will ALONE – not their own and certainly not someone else’s. A true Christian contends that God’s Will is perfect regardless of what circumstances may dictate or whether they understand it. A true Christian aims to reveal God’s Love to those around and to proclaim the Good News that Jesus has provided a way to have a relationship with God and to have your sins forgiven. A true Christian will try to be at peace with all in so far as it is possible, and hence will volunteer to help in many areas where others wouldn’t. A Christian
But in saying all of the above, it doesn’t reveal the incredible joy and peace that comes out of that fulfilled walk with Him. I’ve always found it intriguing that Catholics call themselves such – not primarily Christians, and thus the term Christian appears to almost be reserved for those who term themselves “born again” – which only means that we have accepted Jesus as a Personal Saviour and had a new spiritual birth – there’s nothing strange about it really when it’s what most people are actually seeking. And Jesus outlined it in this way:
John 3:1-8 “And there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to Him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no man can do these miracles which you do unless God is with him. Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. The Spirit breathes where He desires, and you hear His voice, but you do not know from where He comes, and where He goes; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit. “
So if you truly desire a REAL walk with the Lord and not one rooted in (empty) rites and rituals of any church, then follow what Jesus has commanded and submit to Him alone (not a church system or any man on earth!) and you will find food for your soul in abundance. Take the title with reverence and pride and remind others Whom it is you serve by using it appropriately. And remember those who’re dying daily for doing just that in Islamic countries primarily where contending for the Truth can cost you your life!
