Other than the obvious I mean – we all need it after all. But I was thinking primarily about the infamous stance of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in not allowing blood transfusions. Well actually I started off by thinking about organ donation. I’d watched a number of programmes on the topic, and was amazed at how many of the recipients stated that after the transplant, they found themselves doing or saying things out of character for them, but when they talked to the donor’s family quite often they’d discover the traits were very much those of the donor!! I think that was the point where I determined transplants were out for me for the foreseeable (both giving or receiving of!!). But it then started me thinking about it all from a more spiritual perspective given the Drs were at a bit of a loss as to explain it other than in terms of simple DNA transfer and how they figured that the “persona” must somehow be wrapped up in the DNA in some way they don’t yet understand.
Initially I sort of thought they were possibly on the right track, but then thought that can’t be the case either. We are SO not our bodies – otherwise we would remain trapped in them after death, but our spirit and soul immediately go to be with Jesus on death, and as we will be totally aware of who we are and know everything about our lives that’s the part that is US in essence, and I can’t see how any part of our soul or spirit could be transferred to anyone before or after death. So if anyone has any thoughts on that aspect fire away as I’d love to hear them!
But then I started thinking on further and that’s how I ended up looking more closely at the whole concept of blood and where it fits into this whole issue. And I ended up concluding that while I absolutely totally and fully consider JWs to be a cult and totally unscriptural in their beliefs, I could sort of see where they were coming from on this point of not accepting even blood transfusions. Don’t get me wrong – I fully appreciate we’re no longer “under the Law,” but there’s just something about this issue that’s captivated me which quite often means the Holy Spirit at work, and that’s why I’m trying now to gain some counsel from the wider Christian community out there.
If you work through scripture however, God does indeed put a lot of emphasis on blood and how it is not just vital for life, but obviously without the (appropriate) shedding of it, there is no remission of sins etc, which is why Jesus had to die ultimately. And it just makes me wonder if somehow even blood transfusions while perhaps considered extremely important in worldly terms, are somehow against God’s code of conduct. Ultimately I don’t think scripture actively prohibits such a thing even though it wasn’t practiced in biblical times I don’t think, and I suspect regardless of that, if God had wanted to ensure we knew it was indeed against His Will He would have ensured it was written in there somewhere. And that’s what I sort of want to know – apart from the verses that the JWs sometimes throw out do any of you know of any others for or against the concept?? Do you feel that regardless of the importance placed on it in scripture, that such transfusions and/or transplants even would be perfectly acceptable no matter what the possible spiritual repercussions may be?? Would you want someone else’s DNA (and lets face it, blood is and has DNA in it!) floating around in your bloodstream?? Truly looking for a scriptural debate on this, but open to anyone’s view – Christian or otherwise
! Would actually quite appreciate a Jewish perspective on this (hence my tag for Judaism) if anyone’s up for it?

Blood transfusions? If it was for a loved one and I had to decide for them and there was no other way they could survive; I would say hook up the IV. As far as I can tell it is not forbidden in scripture. But there is this one interesting one:
Leviticus 17:14 “…for the life of all flesh is in the blood.”

You can find some Jewish perspective at http://www.jewishpath.org/meseffectsofconsumingblood.html, but a big part of the agenda there is slamming Messianic Jews.

Appreciate that – not sure it’s quite what I’m looking for, but very interesting nonetheless. Thanks

ab initio ad infinitum
Dear TikkiRo,
As always it is a pleasure to read your words, they do inspire me. I have been under the weather lately with my MS, and was in the hospital most of the day today getting a solu-medrol infusion to try to get some mobility back in my extremities. Its 11:00 pm here and though I’m having difficulty typing and “mouseing”, (I don’t think that is even a word, but anyway) when I read your post it blew me away. The reason is just this morning before I left, I was online researching archangel Michael do to a dream last night. I saw a link about JW’s and it reminded me of a discussion the other day with a lady calling to spread the word of the JW’s. So I followed the link. One of the first points that struck my attention, was the blood transfusion thing. Seeing your post tonight is very mysterious to me to say the least. The Lord does work in strange ways.
The name of the JW I spoke with was Donna, and she was very polite. I gave her the utmost respect as she was spreading the Love and Word of the Lord as she knows it. However the question that I discussed with her was about the very name Jehovah. She did not know any more than what her church told her. I did not press the issue for fear I may upset her. I believe The Lord will guide her and myself to the truth if it is His Will. I have read on a couple websites that the name Jehovah means, Yahweh’s ruin, disaster, misfortune and mischief. The “Je” = Yahweh and the “hovah” = ruin, disaster, misfortune and mischief. I don’t know the truth, but I am always curios.
The website Blue Letter Bible http://www.blueletterbible.org/cgi-bin/words.pl??hr=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.AlanHorvath.com/bibletools_yhwh.php&icon=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alanhorvath.com%2Fimages%2Fmissler_strongs.jpg&strongs=01943#about1 says that hovah {ho-vaw’} occurs 3 times in 2 verses: Isa 47:11 and Eze 7:26, please see for yourself. The other website that linked me there is http://www.alanhorvath.com/newz.php , I don’t know much about ether website, sometimes I just bounce from site to site. I would be very interested of what you or your readers have to say about this subject, if anything at all.
I’m sorry I don’t have any information on the blood transfusion, other than what Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah%27s_Witnesses had to say this morning.
P.S. No, I do not believe God is as Fearful looking as he is in the picture posted (on my site), but in my humble opinion, if more people had fear for the Lord as he commands. They just might give Him the worship or even the simple respect He clearly deserves, that is so missing in the world today.

This is a good subject to bring up. I have never thought about it too much, but if something happened to one in my family and it was needed, suddenly it would be an issue. In such a case, I would seek to keep the person alive and would definately pray fervently concerning it. I pray now that such a situation doesn’t come upon me. Thanks for a topic that causes one to ponder.
Have a blessed day in Christ:

I have wondered on this one too, and I also have this sense of – well, I can’t quite put my finger on it. But I think you are onto something…just don’t know quite how to put it either.
Err…he said, helpfully.

Thanks everyone – your input has been invaluable to me in determining how to feel about this. Ultimately both Jewish & Christian perspective seems to point towards not worrying about it overly – at least not from a scriptural perspective. However, I still have that inner niggle somewhere that keeps me from being fully contented on the issue, so I think like Timbob I’m hopeful I never have to make such a decision and if/when it arises can but see what my options are at the time, and make an informed prayerful decision about it at that point. Think that’s all any of us can do

tikkiro! Greetings. I appreciate your great concern in not offending the Lord.
As I grow in the Lord I come to realize more and more His great love for us. I believe He has a plan for everyone and His great goodness has opened the door for many technological and medical breakthroughs. I believe the miracle of blood transfusion is included in that.
It is of my personal belief based on scripture that part of the price Jesus paid on the cross/by His own blood, was for health and healing. When we accept Him as Savior and Lord that’s part of the package. We have a right to it because Jesus said so.
Concerning transfusions, I believe that’s part of the wisdom he has imparted to mankind. Granted, mankind can use the wisdom for good or bad. We choose. There is a thief that comes to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). He seeks to extinguish our lives here on earth. He knows once we are out of the picture, we are disqualified from completing or continuing our “mission” here.
If a child of God is in a car accident (the understood being God doesn’t cause car accidents) this is obviously not their “exit point.” God doesn’t cause sickness or kill people because He was trying to spare them from something else. He has provided the conventional wisdom to help them.
They can be much more effective for Him on earth than in Heaven.
Matthew 5:45 says “for He makes the sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” His goodness spills over onto the people who despise Him just because He’s that good. He gives to us and they get the benefit. Likewise, these advances that benefit mankind are an extention of His mercy.
If you need to conclude scripturally that it’s okay, let’s do this. John 10:10 says “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” That’s here in this life.
If you’re needing a transfusion, you’re obviously in bad shape. The devil is trying to kill, steal from or destroy you. Jesus came to give us life . . . and incorporating the scripture above, that life for your mortal body is in the blood.

Here’s another thought. The Bible tells us in Luke 1:35 that the Holy Spirit would came upon Mary and the power of the Highest overshadowed her and she become pregnant with the Son of God.
When we accept the Son of God (Jesus) as our Lord and Savior, God becomes our Father and the new source of our (spiritual) DNA. That is our new bloodline. We take on His blood type. That’s why the Bible can say we have become a new creation (a species of being that never existed before) in Christ. We’re in the same family. We are joint-heirs with Christ.
I wonder if it’s possible that something in our DNA structure literally changes after we are born again. Science always lines up with the Bible (because true science will always agree with the Bible because it is the Creator’s Word). I’d be curious to know if anyone has ever studied anything like this.

AugustRose, truly appreciate your input and welcome your points, many of which make a lot of spiritual and scriptural sense. Certainly gone a long way to making me feel more comfortable about the prospect of allowing a transfusion should I need one. Your point on the DNA is intriguing indeed – but doubt anyone will be starting to research it anytime soon
)). Reminds me a bit of those scientists who’re still trying to locate the seat of our conciousness, and unable to do so – at best they accept that it doesn’t reside in any one location!

I like your style of writing about the Word of God. And you are accurate when you say JW’s are a cult, for they stray from God’s Word all the time.
And their own history of predicting the end of the world, and getting it wrong time and time again, proves they are not in touch with God at all. For a true prophet of God would never be wrong.
May God Bless you as you follow His path, and His Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior!

Every cell in our body has “memory”. Many personality traits are genetic. While here in this mortal flesh we are a unique combination of physical and spiritual; a kind of symbiotic relationship.
Perhaps that is why people show some traits of their donors this memory somehow transfers in the dna… it’s all rather interesting and yet mysterious as we are fearfully and wonderfully made!
Personally I would rather not have a blood transfusion, but certainly don’t think God would punish us for it! You do bring up an interesting question to ponder though.
Blessings!
